7 DIY Tips for Home Organisation

Got some time on your hands? Or is your house looking a little unruly right now? It might be time to break out your DIY skills to get your home into order and looking great again.

You don’t need to be great at crafts to start getting organised. Use these tips to get you started:

Invest in drawer organisers

Are your drawers messy and difficult to close? Don’t waste time sorting through your drawers if you’re not going to put everything back in an orderly way you can easily maintain. It’s a great idea to invest in some drawer organisers. Whether you’re storing cutlery, craft items, utensils or random bits and pieces, a drawer organiser can help keep everything where it’s supposed to be. You can find a whole range of drawer organisers at places like IKEA or Officeworks to suit your needs.

Make some labels

If you’re having trouble remembering where everything goes, or you want to make sure the whole family is on board with your organising, it might be time to make some labels. You can buy blank labels and write on them yourself, use your own label maker, print labels on your computer, or buy pre-made labels for this job.

Keeping the kid’s bedrooms and playrooms sorted is easily done with picture labels too. Print out pictures of toys, pens, clothes or art and craft materials and place them on the outside of the drawers, cupboards or boxes storing them. This helps little kids know where to put things and can make tidying up a breeze for everyone.

Sort and order your books

Are your bookshelves looking disorganised and messy? Find some order by sorting them out. You can arrange your books by size, in alphabetical order, grouped by author or even by colour. This will give your bookshelves a fresh start and will make sure you’ll be able to find exactly what you need when you need it.

If you’re running out of bookshelf space, why not try a different way of storing them? Stack them in piles placed in strategic places like in corners or against walls where there’s no other furniture. Not only does this keep them out of the way but it also adds a bookish look to your decor too.

Utilise your small spaces

Find some organisation where there was none before. Utilise your narrow and small spaces to store items like spices or cleaning products. One idea is to pick up a space-saving trolley or something similar that can easily fit between your fridge and wall or cupboard space. This is ideal for storing spices and condiments or skinny pantry items, freeing up cupboard space and utilising an area which was previously empty.

Try the same thing with spaces in your bathroom or bedroom too. Under the bed is a perfect but often overlooked storage space.

Put something pretty where the clutter lives

If you have problem areas in your home which are prone to collecting clutter, try putting something pretty there. It’s a simple trick which can help to transform your messy space into a pretty and clutter-free area. You could decorate a photo frame, make some paper or cardboard flowers or pop some real flowers in a vase there.

Once you’ve got your pretty thing in the previously messy space, clutter will no longer be able to accumulate there because there won’t be any room. And you’ll have something to look at which is a whole lot nicer than clutter and mess. Win-win.

Use hooks and shelving to transform your entry

Not having much luck keeping your home’s entryway tidy and clear? Transform it with some hooks and shelving so everything has a place. Use hooks to store jackets, coats, handbags and schoolbags. Use shelves to organise everyone’s shoes. You could also use shelving to place boxes for keeping items like the dog’s lead at the door right where you need it.

If you’re really feeling in the DIY mood and don’t mind a bit of work, creating a small nook for each person in the house is a great idea so they can then be responsible for keeping their own area tidy. Depending on how much space you have, the options are limitless.

Organise the pantry

Most of us could do with a good pantry sorting. Go through all of your items and throw out all the items which are no good or out of date (you might be surprised by what you find!) When you’re putting everything back again, have a think about whether you’ve got everything in the best possible location. Could you move the items you access the most into a better area? Could you utilise some extra shelving to make smaller items more visible and easy to access? Use labels to identify any containers or jars so you can easily find what you’re looking for. If you’ve got time to spare, sorting out your home with a little bit of DIY organising can make a huge difference to the way your house feels. Use labels, shelving, craft and a little bit of creativity and see what you can come up with.
